Walking ideas
A few different ways to enjoy the landscape around Burpham, whether you are after a short stroll or a longer walk before lunch.
Gentle Riverside Walks
For an easier outing, head towards the Arun Valley and South Stoke for flatter footpaths, peaceful views and a slower pace. Ideal for a shorter pre-lunch walk, dog walkers and anyone who prefers gentler ground.
South Downs Views
If you feel like something more energetic, the paths around Wepham Down and the surrounding hills offer wide open skies and some of the best views in this part of West Sussex. Especially beautiful on clear late summer and autumn days.
Village and History Walks
For something shorter, enjoy a wander through Burpham itself, including St Mary’s Church and the historic setting around Burpham Camp. A lovely option for guests looking for a relaxed walk before settling in for lunch.
Wellness Walking Tours
For a guided walk, we recommend Wellness Walking Tours, who lead small-group and private walks through the beautiful countryside around Arundel, Amberley and Burpham. Expect rolling hills, ancient woodland, rivers, wildflower meadows, local history and plenty of stories from the landscape along the way.
Their guided Burpham walk starts and finishes at The George at Burpham, making it an easy way to enjoy the South Downs before returning for a well-earned drink or meal. Learn More.
Before You Set Off
A little planning goes a long way, especially as the seasons begin to change.
What to Expect
Paths can be dry and bright in late summer, then muddier underfoot as autumn rolls in. Chalk slopes can also become slippery after rain, so suitable footwear is always a good idea.
Useful Walking Apps
If you would like help planning a route, free-to-use apps such as AllTrails, Outdooractive, OS Maps and Komoot can be useful for exploring the area. Some features are free, while extras such as offline maps may require a paid plan.
A Few Practical Notes
Please keep to marked paths, take litter home, and keep dogs under close control, especially near livestock. If you are planning a longer route, it is always worth checking conditions and the weather before setting off.

Make a Day of It
Many guests like to start with coffee, head out for a walk, and return for a long lunch or Sunday roast.
Whether you are joining us after a riverside stroll or a longer Downs walk, The George is a lovely place to warm up, unwind and round off the day.
If you are visiting at a weekend, booking ahead is recommended.
